Mining is simply the extraction of substances that are called minerals from the earth surface. Mining has been a point of debate in the country as it has a positive and negative impact to local communities.
Some people like environmental advocacy groups are tensed and concerned in the illicit and irresponsible mining which tend to create a massive destruction of ecology. I can say that mining is destructive because it uses different methods like open-pit mining and intense/deep excavations in mountains and even in rivers which degrades rainforests, agricultural lands, and large bodies of water that negatively impact the lives of people in terms of health and safety, food security, livelihood, and a clean environment. Most especially to individuals who are within the vicinity of mining activities.
Despite of these issues, mining continues to grow as time goes by with the help of advancement of different technology which also made mining more significant. The government also imposed moratorium to mining companies to explore and commence its operations in various mining areas in the country. According to the Mines & Geosciences Bureau, the Philippines is known to be having a very high mineral potential and resources. With this, we can claim that mining is considerably beneficial in terms of employment opportunities, hence it helps us to increase and provides raw materials necessary for economic growth and innovation of the country's economy and allows us to have and make use of the things we need for our daily living and existence.
As a student, I stand to believe that mining is advantageous provided that stricter regulations are imposed and carried out in order to protect the people and preserve the environment against the negative impacts of mining.
