Araw ng Kagitingan” (Day of Valor) marks the annual commemoration of the Fall of Bataan on April 9, 1942, and the bravery of Filipino and American soldiers during the campaign against invading Japanese forces during World War II.The date also commemorates the Bataan Death March, where exhausted Filipino and American prisoners of war were forced by their Japanese captors to march from Bataan to San Fernando, Pampanga. Of the 78,000 Filipino and American troops who surrendered, 5,000 to 10,000 Filipino soldiers and around 650 American soldiers died along the way.Bataan has a very important role and inhabits a special place in the history of the Dominicans and Augustinian Recollects in the Philippines as it has been the place of some of the earliest evangelization. And now, Bataan is definitely a tourist friendly province in the Philippines where everyone needs to drop by at the Bataan Tourism Center where tourist will be assisted during their stay in the province. Amidst the pandemic, We Filipinos still tend to commemorate this historical event to give respect and commendation for the soldiers who fought for their lives to protect us from the Japanese invasion during the WW2. The significance of the Battle for Bataan in 1942 need not to be lost to our youth or to the present generation and to the succeeding generations. Love for country and admiration for heroes is the very essential in creating and building a strong country. The efforts and sacrifice of our soldiers to claim the victory against odds and the role of the townspeople in giving their relief to the captive heroes will add more meaning to big words like patriotism, freedom, courage and resilience.
Truly, commemorating this kinds of events is really important, it is not simply just remembering what happened in the past, but also it allows us to give acknowledgement to the people who fought for our country. Even in the pandemic, events or days like this needs to be remembered, since it shows that we are giving importance and showing patriotism, also it improves the resiliency of our beloved nation.
